Movies should be something that help us suspend our reality. Movies that are too close to reality remind us of the stress and pain of our own lives. Let’s face it, there is already enough stress and pain. If movies are too fanciful, we can’t picture ourselves in them. The movie might tell a good story, but we can’t escape from our reality because it is too far-fetched. No, the best movies ride the line between reality and fantasy. They captivate us, invite us in, and help us remember our highest values and dreams.
Newsies is the movie that does this for me. The score of the musical grabs my heart, begging me to sing and dance along with the newsboys. The playfulness brings levity and joy. The theme of fighting for what is right inspires me to reach for my own highest goals. And the unity of the newsies makes me long for deeper relationships with my friends.
This movie transports me to a simpler life where there is only one thing worth fighting for. It also inspires me to take up the fight and seize the day. Newsies has just enough pain and suffering to make it true to life. It also conquers the difficulty of life in such inspiring ways.
So, if you have lost sight of what matters to you. If you find it difficult to believe in yourself or your dreams. I strongly encourage you spend two hours watching precise and powerful choreography, lively singing, and a storyline meant to remind you that your biggest dreams and goals are worthy fighting for. Enjoy!
