Grief & Loss Counseling

Grief & Loss Counseling in Castle Rock, CO

Grief is one of life’s greatest challenges, one that many of us hope we never have to face. But to love and live is, in some regards, to lose. As we get older, growth will lead to change, and that change can lead to loss and grief that we struggle to process.

Although it can arise from the death of a loved one, grief can also be caused by many other things. Moving away from home, beginning a new phase in life, the death of a pet, divorce and the loss of safety and control after trauma can all lead to heavy, difficult feelings of grief.

We want to help every person who comes to us to move beyond their past and truly live free. Overcoming grief is not about forgetting; it is about acknowledgment, acceptance and forgiveness.

The Stages of Grief

Contrary to popular belief, grief does not happen in any sequential order. The five stages of grief are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, but people may experience only one of these or bounce between them with no apparent sense of order. You may feel like you are doing well one day only to wake up the next and be trapped under the crushing weight of loss.

Grief comes in waves, and that wave can be difficult to overcome on your own. Working through the stages of grief, and learning that there is no wrong way to grieve, can help you begin your journey toward healing.

Coping With Loss

The death of a friend or family member can affect us in unexpected ways. Sometimes, people are struck by tremendous guilt, regret and pain by the death of someone they were not even particularly close to. However you have come to know loss, know that we are with you and support you, regardless of whether your feelings make sense to you or anyone else.

Loss is something difficult to understand, and it can trigger feelings of depression, grief or possibly even anxiety. Loss is not always related to death, either. You can experience loss after trauma – loss of the self, loss of safety, loss of hope. Whatever type of loss you experience, it deserves to be acknowledged, supported and accepted with time.

Only when we recognize the pain of our past can we make changes in the present toward a better future.

Grief and Trauma Counseling

We are a counseling center that wants to help anyone heal from their emotional wounds. Regardless of how long you have been grieving or what you have experienced, we offer a safe, compassionate space for you to openly reveal your feelings and get in touch with your emotions.

Sometimes, allowing ourselves to truly feel grief is the most difficult part of the process. Through counseling, we will be there to guide you through loss and help you recover yourself along the way. You will never be alone, judged or pushed beyond your limits. It is our goal to meet you exactly where you are and work together to get where you want to be.

Commonly Asked Questions About Grief & Loss Counseling

What are the five stages of grief?
Denial, anger bargaining, depression and acceptance are the original five stages of grief in the Kübler-Ross model. It is important to acknowledge this aspect of the process, as moving from the earlier stages to acceptance is not a simple process.
Does grief cause depression?
Yes, prolonged grief and loss can lead to depression. It can even cause trauma in and of itself. If you are feeling prolonged depression after experiencing a loss or major change, you are not broken. It is a normal, natural response, and part of the healing process.
Does grief last forever?
You will never forget the losses you have experienced, but that does not mean you will live every day in pain. You do not have to “get over” death or loss; it can instead be processed and reshaped into a part of your life story.

Grief has seasons, and you will likely experience many throughout your life as unexpected triggers and events remind you of what is no longer here. But with counseling, you can learn how to process and cope with grief, giving yourself permission to feel, miss and remember as you need to.
