Frequently Asked Questions

We understand starting counseling can be an intimidating decision. It takes courage to reach out for help and there are many questions you may have along the way. On this page, we have taken time to answer many frequently asked questions we receive on a daily basis. Please use this page as a resource for information on how we approach counseling, how the process works, and treatments we may use during our time together. If you have any questions not found on this page, or would like to schedule an appointment, please call 720.465.6180 or click here.

Where do I start?
Call us at 720.465.6180. We are happy to talk with you. Or send us a secure, confidential message here, and we will contact you within one business day.
What can I expect on that first call?
We’ll ask you a few questions about what type of support you’re seeking and why, to make sure that we’re a good fit. We will answer all your questions and if we both feel good moving forward, we’ll schedule an initial session. Contact us online here or at 720.465.6180.
What happens at the initial session?
Your therapist will gather information from you, including what brought you in for counseling, your story and history, and what you desire out of the healing process. Together, you and your therapist will make a plan on how to move forward and meet your goals.
What should I expect going forward?
Sessions are approximately 50 minutes. We typically see clients once a week, especially as we build momentum in the beginning.
Where are you located?
Our offices are in Suite 205 at 695 Jerry Street in beautiful downtown Castle Rock, Colorado. A few blocks west of Perry and Wilcox Streets, we’re in the same multi-colored building as Domino’s Pizza.
How much do you charge?

Counseling sessions are $225 per 50-minute session.

Do you take insurance?
We do not accept private insurance. You may be able to use your out-of-network benefits; some of our therapists can provide a Superbill. Please call for more details.
Are the sessions confidential?
We are committed to creating a safe, judgment-free space where you can comfortably share your thoughts and feelings. That means that what is said in our office, stays in our office. We take this very seriously, as confidentiality is at the core of trust and safety.

If you want your therapist to share information with a doctor, family member, etc., then they will ask you to sign a written release granting them permission, without which they cannot share information.

The only exception to this is mandatory reporting, which is required of all therapists. By law, if a client is a danger to him/herself or others, or if a child or elder is in danger or has been hurt, the therapist must report it, regardless of the client’s wishes.

Your therapist will cover mandatory reporting in the first session, and answer any questions you may have.

What is trauma?
Trauma is an overwhelming experience that exceeds our ability to cope and process through it normally. It  keeps us stuck. These experiences affect how people feel about themselves, others, and the world around them, long after the trauma occurs. Often, those who suffer from trauma are unaware they’ve experienced it. We define trauma more fully here. Explore our unique approaches to trauma here.
What makes LiveFree different from other counseling practices? What does it mean to “specialize” in trauma?
We focus on helping people who have experienced trauma to recover and reclaim their lives. We combine traditional therapy with advanced techniques, including EMDR and neurofeedback. By specializing, we are able to bring together expert therapists and targeted treatments to get our clients the best results possible, and experience lasting change.

It is our passion to help people name what is behind their pain, empowering them to grow and heal. We love supporting people to live free—from the past, and from trauma.

What is PTSD, and how is Complex PTSD different?
PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a condition generally related to a single event. The most familiar example is the veteran suffering from anxiety and other repercussions after serving on the battlefield.

Complex PTSD is related to a series of events, or one prolonged event. It arises when a person has experienced severe chronic trauma such as abuse, neglect, or repeated betrayal. Those suffering from Complex PTSD often feel disconnected from themselves and the world. We treat Complex PTSD with a combination of therapies.

What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desenistization and Reprocessing) is a powerful treatment that uses the brain’s natural healing process to help people work through traumatic memories, leaving disturbing events behind them. People find relief and freedom from issues that plagued them for years and often when nothing else worked.
I don’t know if I have PTSD, but sometimes I just feel crazy. What’s wrong with me, and can you help?
Many clients walk into counseling with the fear that they are crazy. For instance, they cannot sit in a restaurant without continually scanning the group for signs of danger. Many have to position themselves in the corner or a room or with their backs to the wall so people can’t sneak up on them or so they can see the door. They are jumpy and cannot stand when others touch them. They often feel something is wrong with them.

You are not crazy. Those are symptoms of PTSD and are simply signs that you have had some overwhelming experiences in your life. Think of it as your brain trying to keep you safe by staying alert. Counseling, particularly EMDR, and Neurofeedback, can really help with that.

Do you only treat trauma? Do you treat other issues, such as depression and anxiety?
We specialize in trauma, but we also treat a wide range of issues. Trauma also often presents with a variety of symptoms, from depression, anxiety, relational issues, sleep disturbance, anger, irritability, low self-esteem, grief, to a lost sense of self. Contact us online here or at 720.465.6180 to see if we can help.
